What qualifications are typically required for postdoctoral positions in theoretical chemistry?
I'm nearing the end of my PhD and am passionate about teaching at the undergraduate level. Beyond the obvious requirement of a doctoral degree, I'm uncertain about the weight given to formal teaching training, postdoctoral research, or industry experience when search committees evaluate candidates.

While a PhD in chemistry or a closely related field is the non-negotiable foundation, I've served on search committees where the decisive factor was demonstrable, reflective teaching experience. You must have a robust teaching philosophy and evidence of its application not just as a teaching assistant, but in designing assessments and perhaps a full course module. I would recommend actively seeking opportunities for formal pedagogical training; many universities offer certificates. While postdoctoral research strengthens your depth, a well-constructed teaching portfolio often carries equal weight for primarily undergraduate institutions.
