What’s the real difference between a business "cluster" and an "ecosystem"?

People throw around terms like "tech cluster" and "startup ecosystem." Are they just synonyms, or is there an important distinction between the two ideas?

There's a key difference in scope. A cluster is primarily about geography—it's a physical concentration of interconnected companies and institutions in one industry, like Silicon Valley for tech. An ecosystem is much broader. It includes the cluster but also the intangible elements: the investment culture, supportive policies, shared mindset, and networks that can even extend beyond a single location. Think of a cluster as a vital organ within the larger, living body of an ecosystem.
