Prospect Theory suggests people are more sensitive to losses than gains. When it comes to having children, the immediate and visible costs—career breaks, financial strain, loss of freedom—feel more certain and painful than the uncertain future rewards of parenthood. Because people tend to favor the status quo and avoid perceived losses, they often postpone childbearing rather than risk giving up what they already have.
