Why is reading imaginative literature considered important?

Imaginative literature is often defended in general terms. However, its value is increasingly questioned in utilitarian frameworks.I want a grounded explanation of why it still matters.

From my experience teaching literature across levels, imaginative reading develops capacities that instrumental learning cannot. I have seen students gain ethical sensitivity, interpretive patience, and emotional range through sustained engagement with fiction and poetry. I would recommend defending literature not as escapism, but as cognitive and moral training. It helps readers rehearse complexity, uncertainty, and human difference in ways few other disciplines can replicate.
