Calculating SAR Using Ansys HFSS for Antenna-Tissue Interaction

When designing antennas intended to operate near or on the human body, SAR compliance becomes critical. I want to understand how SAR is computed within Ansys HFSS, what modeling assumptions are involved for biological tissues, and how simulation results should be interpreted in line with safety standards.

From my experience performing SAR evaluations in HFSS, I have seen that the key lies in accurate tissue modeling and power normalization. HFSS computes SAR using the local electric field and tissue conductivity, averaged over 1 g or 10 g of tissue as defined by IEEE and ICNIRP standards. I would recommend carefully assigning frequency-dependent dielectric properties and ensuring the input power is scaled to realistic operating levels. While HFSS provides automated SAR calculators, interpretation still requires engineering judgment, especially near tissue boundaries where meshing and averaging significantly influence reported peak values.
