Basically there are two types of projects which can be done in PhD, one is industrial oriented projects and second is research oreinted projects. Now in your case if you want to plan for PhD in thermal engineering, you must first select which type of projects you can handle more efficiently. It will be easy to take industrial projects as the problems are well stated in them. Where you have to work on how to overcome the problems with a feasible solution.
