How can sociological approaches contribute to reducing maternal mortality in developing countries?

Maternal mortality is often framed as a medical problem. However, outcomes vary widely across social contexts.I’m interested in how sociology adds explanatory and practical value.

From my experience working alongside public health researchers, I’ve seen that medical interventions alone rarely solve maternal mortality. Sociological approaches highlight how gender norms, education, poverty, and weak institutions shape outcomes. I would recommend focusing on community engagement and accountability, because trust in healthcare systems is crucial. When sociological insight is integrated into policy design, interventions tend to be more sustainable and responsive to local realities rather than externally imposed solutions.
