How can the political economy approach be explained in social science research?

The term is frequently used but often loosely defined. I want to understand how researchers actually apply it analytically. This is for grounding empirical work in a solid theoretical frame.

From my experience, the political economy approach works by foregrounding how power, resources, and institutions shape social outcomes. I have seen it used to connect everyday phenomena to broader economic systems and state policies. I would recommend explaining it as a way of asking who benefits, who loses, and how material conditions and political decisions interact, rather than as a purely economic analysis.
