From my experience, sociologists view the family less as a fixed unit and more as a dynamic social arrangement. I have seen research emphasize roles, power relations, and cultural variation rather than idealized definitions. I would recommend approaching the family as a flexible institution shaped by economic conditions, norms, and historical context. This perspective allows scholars to account for changing family forms without treating deviation as dysfunction.
