Is political sociology better understood as part of sociology or as a branch of policy science?

This question often arises in interdisciplinary programs.Political sociology seems to overlap with political science and policy studies.I want to understand where its analytical commitments primarily lie.

From my experience working in interdisciplinary departments, I’ve seen political sociology firmly grounded in sociology’s concern with social structure and power. While it clearly informs policy debates, its core aim is explanatory rather than prescriptive. I would recommend viewing policy science as an applied field that often draws on political sociology for insight. Political sociologists tend to ask how political behavior is socially produced, not how policy should ideally be designed.
