What are the recommended resources to start studying synthetic biology?

As someone transitioning from classical molecular biology, I'm looking for the essential primers textbooks, key papers, or online courses that the community trusts. I want to build a strong conceptual and practical foundation before diving into specialized literature.

I often recommend starting with a combination of a foundational text and landmark reviews. For a textbook, I’ve seen “Synthetic Biology: A Primer” by Baldwin et al. provide an excellent, accessible framework. Pair this with the seminal 2000 review by Elowitz and Leibler, “A Synthetic Oscillatory Network,” to see the conceptual spark. I would also strongly recommend MIT’s OpenCourseWare on synthetic biology; their problem sets are invaluable for grasping the engineering mindset. Begin there, then follow the citations that pique your interest.
