What does a "toxic" research lab culture look like, and how can I spot it before joining?

I'm visiting labs for my PhD or postdoc. Beyond the science, I want to ensure the work environment is supportive. What are concrete signs of a toxic culture I should watch for when speaking with the PI and current lab members?

Your due diligence is critical. Warning signs include: 1) High Lab Turnover: Ask how many PhD students graduated in the last 5 years and where they are now. A string of students leaving without finishing is a major red flag. 2) Body Language: Do lab members seem anxious, avoid eye contact, or give vague answers when the PI is present? 3) PI's Attitude: Does the PI publicly shame or belittle current or former members? Do they boast about "weeding out the weak"? 4) Unreasonable Expectations: An expectation to work nights, weekends, and holidays as the norm. 5) Authorship Disputes: Ask about the lab's authorship policy. Vague answers or stories of fights over credit are bad signs. Talk to current members privately, without the PI present, and ask: "What is the biggest challenge working here?" Listen carefully to what is not said.
