What role do lab meetings play in shaping research culture?

Our lab meetings are either tense grilling sessions or boring data dumps. I'm a senior PhD student and want to suggest improvements. What makes a lab meeting truly effective at building a positive and productive culture?

Great lab meetings are the heartbeat of a healthy lab culture. They should be collaborative workshops, not solo performances or inquisitions. To improve them, propose a rotating structure: 1) "Problem-Solving Session": A member presents a stuck point (failed experiment, confusing result) for 5 minutes, then the group brainstorms solutions for 15. 2) "Journal Club Lite": A quick discussion of one cool new paper relevant to the lab's work. 3) "Skill Share": A 10-minute tutorial on a useful tool or technique. Most importantly, the PI must model good behavior: ask curious questions, not hostile ones; admit their own past struggles; and ensure everyone has a chance to speak. The goal is to leave feeling energized and supported, not judged or drained. You can suggest this as a "month-long trial" to improve efficiency and morale.
