What is the standard structure or template for a PhD synopsis in Engineering fields?

I'm in Mechanical Engineering and need to submit a synopsis for my topic approval. I have all the details but am unsure how to organize them. Is there a widely accepted template that includes sections like problem statement, objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes?

Yes, a standard structure provides clarity and ensures you cover all critical components. I recommend this template for Engineering synopses:

  1. Title: Clear and descriptive.
  2. Introduction/Problem Statement: Context and the specific gap your research addresses.
  3. Objectives & Research Questions: 3-5 specific, measurable aims.
  4. Literature Review (Brief): A paragraph synthesizing key prior work and identifying the gap.
  5. Proposed Methodology: The core approach (e.g., simulation in ANSYS, experimental setup, algorithm development).
  6. Expected Outcomes/Contributions: Theoretical, methodological, or practical advancements.
  7. Tentative Timeline (if required): Broad phases (e.g., Year 1: Literature & Design).
  8. References: Key 10-15 citations only.
Keep it concise; each section should be 2-3 paragraphs maximum. The focus should be on logical flow from problem to solution.
