What role does technology actually play in advancing sustainable development goals?

I often encounter claims that technology is central to sustainable development, but these arguments vary widely in depthAs a researcher, I want to understand whether technology is a driver, an enabler, or merely a supporting tool.I am particularly interested in how this role is interpreted across development contexts.

From my experience in sustainability research, technology is best understood as an enabler rather than a solution in itself. I have seen technological interventions succeed only when they are embedded within supportive institutions, policies, and social practices. Technology can improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and expand access, but it does not automatically deliver sustainable outcomes. I would recommend treating technology as part of a broader socio-technical system, where governance, culture, and equity considerations ultimately determine whether technological advances contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.
