Which journal would be suitable for publishing a short molecular biology study?

I've completed a solid, self-contained investigation with clear results, but it's not an extensive, multi-year project. I want to avoid journals where it would be deemed too preliminary or, conversely, too niche for a general audience. Finding the right "home" feels critical for my early career.

I often advise my students to start with specialized, peer-reviewed journals that have a "Short Communication" or "Research Letter" section. For a molecular biology study, journals like FEBS Letters, Biochimie, or the Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC) "Communications" are classic examples. I would recommend first thoroughly reading 2-3 recent issues of a candidate journal to ensure your work aligns with their current topical and methodological focus. The key is fit: your study should feel like a natural addition to their conversation, not an outlier. Avoid the temptation to immediately aim for the highest impact factor; a timely publication in a respected, specialty journal is a strong career move.
