Applications of nanotechnology in construction industry

Nanotechnology is definitely used in construction work and has a wide variety of applications. One such application is in concrete. Nanotechnology is used in studying its features such as alkali silica reaction, hydration reaction, and fly ash reactivity. a) When pozzolana is used in the concrete mix as a replacement of partial cement reduces the ASR occurrence since they reduce the alkalinity of the pore fluid. b) Fly ash enhances concrete durability, strength and sustainability of the cement and reduces the need for more cement c) Adding nano-silica leads to densifying micro and nanostructure results in enhanced mechanical properties.

Nanotechnology is used in concrete as well as steel. Since name1 has already explained about the concrete  I won’t be explaining the same. Here I will explain about the application of nanotechnology in steel.  MMFX2 is nanostructure-modified steel and has varied microstructure- laminated lath structure.  Due to the modified nanostructure, this steel has excellent mechanical properties such as ductility,  higher strength, and fatigue resistance. These properties lead to longer service life.

Nanotechnology is used in coating. The coating including nano particles has protective and anti-corrosion coatings.  Other properties of such coatining are thermal control, energy saving, and more durable paints for buildings and structures.
