This likely refers to a self-justifying or self-supporting form of realism. In philosophy of science, it could denote a pragmatic realism where the success of our scientific theories, achieved through our own methodological "bootstraps" (i.e., without an external, God's-eye view), is taken as the best evidence for their approximate truth about a mind-independent reality. It's realism earned through our own cognitive labor.
