How do I explain a gap year or a low grade in one semester during my PhD interview?
I took a year off after my Master's to work due to family reasons, and I have one semester where my grades dipped. I'm worried these will be seen as lack of commitment or academic weakness. How should I bring this up?

Address this proactively, briefly, and positively. If asked, don't hide it. Frame the gap year as a period of growth and reaffirmation. For example: "That year managing X for my family gave me crucial project management skills and solidified my desire to return to research with greater maturity and focus." For the low grade: "That semester was challenging due to Y. I learned to Z [e.g., seek help earlier, manage workload], which is reflected in my strong subsequent performance and thesis work." The panel wants to see self-awareness, resilience, and the ability to learn from setbacks—traits essential for a PhD. Your explanation should be concise, take ownership without excuses, and pivot back to your current readiness.
