Principle behind Michelson interferometer
I’m done with Michelson interferometer and the experiment. I guess I will never be able to measure the displacement using the wave nature of light. I have decided to quit. I don’t even the exact working principle of the interferometer.

Take a break. Once you feel better and are ready to go with it, watch this video. It will provide you adequate details about the interferometer.

Laser light must be incident on a beam splitter consisting of a partially reflective surface glass plate. Around 50% of the light will be reflected from the surface of the glass plate and 50% will be transmitted. The reflected light beam hits mirror call it m1 and reflects back towards the beam splitter. Similar goes with the transmitted light, but here the mirror to be considered is m2. Then 50% of the intensity of the reflected beam will be transmitted/reflected towards the screen. Here both the beams (transmitted & reflected) overlap to constructive and destructive interference depending upon the relative phase shift between the two plane waves.
