Software recommendation in Medical image processing

I am doing my PhD in medical image processing. I have knowledge on Matlab software. But can u recommend software other than matlab for image processing ?

LastWave is an open source signal processing language that can do sophisticated image processing. OpenCV is a good option, fast for image processing if you work with c++. Scilab is also there for your need, it's free and you can develop your own lib.
