I personally prefer STATA over SPSS because STATA is more comprehensive, supports multi processing and is coherent.

SPSS works strong with ANOVA related procedures. An advantage of SPSS over STATA is that SPSS has revised its syntax to be consistent with a single user. Also, it is used if you want to minimize complex data management. SPSS is user friendly because its layout is similar to Excel spreadsheet, beginners find it is easy to learn.

Use the software which suits your research field. SPSS is used in medical and social science areas whereas STATA is used in econometrics.
