The types of research depends on the purpose of study. 
Based on the study purpose, methods can be divided into two types; applied and fundamental.

Research methods is divided into applied and fundamental approach based on the purpose of the study.
Applied research tries to eliminate the theory, analyses problem from a point of discipline, implements forecasting approach, assumes that other variables do not change and compiles language in technical terms. Whereas fundamental approach aims to solve an issue by adding to the field of application, explains how things have changed, acknowledges if other variables are constant by changing and compiles report in common language.

Research methods can be according to research design and purpose of study. Name2 has already explained about research methods based on research design. Based on research design, research methods can be divided into exploratory and conclusive research. In exploratory research, findings may be topic specific and may not have relevance outside of researcher’s domain. Whereas in conclusive research, findings will be significant as they have theoretical or applied implications.
