What are longitudinal and shear piezo actuators

Yes, there are similarities between the two. I.e. shear actuator is similar to longitudinal versions.  It consists of several layers of piezo elements. However, they vary in application of voltage and the kind of motion developed.  In shear piezo actuators, the elements are horizontally polarised horizontally and electrical field is applied orthogonally.  The resulting displacement is in the horizontal plane and creates a shear-type motion. The height of shear actuators is combined  with longitudinal actuators in multi-axis systems but are limited by shear stresses and bending.

Definitely yes. There are a few similarities between the two piezo actuators.  Since name1 has already explained about the shear actuators, I won’t be explaining it again. Here I will explain about the longitudinal actuators. Longitudinal actuators are developed by layering multiple piezo elements.  This combines the impact of expansion of each to produce a movement and force.   The longitudinal actuators have a high force density resulting in useful force.   This piezo actuator also have high resonant frequency which makes it suited for dynamic application.
