What are the main concerns and research areas within the sociology of correction?

I’ve encountered this subfield in criminology and sociology programs. It seems broader than just the study of prisons.I want to understand its sociological scope and core questions.

From my experience engaging with correctional research, the sociology of correction looks well beyond prison walls. I’ve seen scholars analyze probation systems, rehabilitation programs, and everyday institutional practices that shape punishment. I would recommend viewing it as a study of power and social control, particularly how inequality is reproduced through penal systems. It also pays close attention to reintegration, asking how institutions affect identities, life chances, and social belonging after incarceration.
