What is the effect of environmental taxes on GDP per capita?

I am researching environmental fiscal policy and want to understand whether environmental taxes slow economic growth or support long-term prosperity. I am particularly interested in their impact on GDP per capita across different economic contexts.

From my experience, environmental taxes do not necessarily reduce GDP per capita when they are well designed. I have seen cases where revenues are recycled into lowering labor taxes or funding green innovation, which offsets short-term costs. In the long run, these taxes improve resource efficiency and reduce health and environmental damage, supporting productivity. I would recommend viewing environmental taxes as structural policy tools rather than pure revenue instruments. When aligned with broader economic reforms, they can support both sustainability and steady income growth.
