What is the mandatory structure for a PhD synopsis‑ Is there a fixed template we must use?

I need to submit my synopsis for registration. I've seen different templates online. Does a universally accepted structure exist, or does it vary completely by university and discipline?

While university guidelines are final, a strong, widely accepted template includes these sections in order:

  1. Title of the Research
  2. Candidate & Supervisor Details
  3. Introduction & Background (Context and problem significance)
  4. Statement of the Problem (Clear gap identification)
  5. Research Questions/Aims & Objectives
  6. Brief Review of Literature (Synthesizing the gap, not surveying)
  7. Research Methodology (Overview of design, methods, data sources)
  8. Expected Outcomes/Contributions
  9. References/Bibliography (Key 10-15 sources only)
  10. Candidate's Declaration & Date
This structure creates a logical flow from "what's the problem?" to "how will I solve it?" and "what will it add?". Always check your department's specific cover page and declaration format first.
