Why is Grid Independence Test important in CFD works, especially when it comes to publishing of the results?

I am working on CFD implementation and most of my collegues has suggested to perform grid independence test for the same. Is grid independence study a must for CFD works.

The CFD results without checking the grid convergence is untrustworthy. Generally reducing the mesh size or increasing the no. of elements refines the mesh and make the results better. But it is important two check the difference between the results of two different mesh refinements in order to validate the accuracy of the result. If there are no or negligible variation in results, then the mesh size which gives lesser computational time can be opt as the optimum mesh size. Also after doing the GIT, it can be validated that results are independent of the mesh applied which helps in understanding the various aspects of the results obtained.
