Selective media technique is used for the growth of specific microorganisms. Assume that a microorganism is resistant to a particular antibiotic, then that particular antibiotic is added to the medium to prevent the growth of other cells that do not possess the resistance to the antibiotics.

Selective media technique is normally used for the growth of a particular or desired microorganism by killing non-desired microorganisms. This technique is also used in cell culture to make sure that the proliferation of cells with properties such as antibiotic resistance.

The major difference between the selective and non-selective media technique is that, the non-selective media allows the growth of several different bacterial species whereas the selective media technique allows the growth of only specific bacteria. Using selective media technique you can also isolate a certain strain of microorganism which is not possible in non-selective technique.
