Impellers are the most important factor that is used to determine the performance of a centrifugal pump. An impeller is every important because it optimises flow in a centrifugal pump while minimising the turbulence and maximising efficiency. Impellers can be either single-suction or double-suction. A single-suction impeller lets the liquid to enter the center only from one direction. A double-suction impeller lets liquid to enter the center from two sides.

Impellers are used to increase the efficiency of the centrifugal pump. They are of two types of impellers. 1. Open impeller – they have the vanes that are free on both sides. Open impellers are structurally weak are used in inexpensive pumps, small-diameter, and pumps handling suspended solids. 2. Semi-open impeller – in this type of impeller, the vanes are free on one side and enclosed on the other. These offer higher efficiencies and are used in medium-diameter pumps.

Seema There is one more kind of impeller called the closed impeller. In this type of impeller the vanes are located in between the two discs and are used in pumps with high efficiency. The closed impeller is complicated because of the additional wear rings are required.
