How can I use social media (like Twitter/X or Bluesky) effectively for research networking?

My colleagues are on "Academic Twitter," but it seems chaotic. How do I actually use it for networking rather than just scrolling? What should I post, and how do I interact with senior scholars there without being ignored?

Platforms like Twitter/X and Bluesky are for public conversation. To network effectively: 1) Optimize your profile: Clear photo, description of your research interests, link to your website/Lab. 2) Be a curator & contributor: Share your new preprint with a key finding in the tweet, post interesting papers you read (why they're interesting), and share small wins or thoughtful questions. 3) Engage, don't broadcast: Reply to senior scholars' posts with substantive comments—add an insight, a related paper, or a genuine question. Avoid empty praise ("Great thread!"). 4) Use conference hashtags (#ASM2024, #MLA2025) to follow and join conversations in real-time, even if you're not there. The goal is to become a recognizable voice in your field's digital commons. Start by listening, then gradually participate. Consistency over time is key.
