Is it appropriate to connect with researchers on LinkedIn, and what should my message say?
I found a researcher whose work is highly relevant to mine on LinkedIn. Is it considered professional to send a connection request? If so, should I just click 'connect' or include a message? What should that message say to get a response?

Yes, it's professional, but never use the generic connection request. Always add a note. Keep it concise and specific: "Dear Dr. [Last Name], I'm [Your Name], a PhD student at [University] working on [Your Topic]. I recently read your paper on [Specific Paper/Concept] and found it incredibly helpful for my own work on [Your Project]. I would be honored to connect here to follow your research. Best, [Your Name]." This shows you've done your homework and have a genuine scholarly interest. The goal is to initiate a low-commitment, professional link. They may not respond, but they'll likely accept. This lays groundwork for a future, more substantive email. Make sure your own LinkedIn profile is professional and academic-focused before sending.
