How do I defend my PhD?

6 years ago in Dissertation/Thesis By Lalit Mudra

PhD

I have to give my Viva in September and I was pondering from where should I begin. I need to be exhaustive with my planning and would love it if the individuals who have given viva can share their experience. Like, how did you plan? what all did your inspectors inquire? Where there any changes to be made? What’s more, was there any inclination? That is to say, if your supervisor doesn’t support you, does that influences your external viva?

Try not to be lethargic- That’s my solitary suggestion for you. I did the same mistake when I was preparing for my defence session and now I regret for not preparing well when I had time and then made a fuss about it in the end. When the moment arrived, my palms were sweaty, I was nervous like hell, it was scary. It happened just because I didn’t prepare when I had time so, I would suggest you not to waste time and start preparing. Good fortunes ahead of time!

I agree if you go for your defence session without or incomplete preparation it will not go well but my viva was great and the only reason behind it is that I was well prepared. I knew each and everything related to my research area and that boosted my confidence. I didn’t wait for the last moment but I started preparing for it as soon as my date was out. I made notes, pointed out every possible questions. This is how I prepared my defence session.

Do not underestimate how long it takes to prepare your slides/talk and make sure you give multiple practice talks Listen to other thesis defence talks Have your friends, labmates, and others drill you with questions Re-read over your entire thesis and write out your own list of questions Keep your cool and relax Have a good structure Keep these key points in mind and i am sure you will surely crack it. All the best!
