How to define an appropriate style of leadership that goes beyond geographical boundaries?

Hi everyone, I know this question is vague. Therefore, I will give you an example. Due to covid-19, we all saw how there’s a need for better leadership in order to tackle such a huge crisis which can shake the entire world.

I am preparing an article in which my focus is on where things went wrong while handling the case and how a better leadership could have resulted in a better outcome.

So, I am just asking for a general perspective on what is an appropriate leadership style that can overcome the geographical barriers and provide better directions to lead the people globally? How this global pandemic, never ending lockdown and the fear imposed by it could have been better taken care of by a remote leadership style that is universal?

Your opinions hold value to my article. Please give reasoned answers (if possible). Thank you.

Well, this is an interesting question. I think among all the different styles and types of leadership, two types are more suitable in such a situation. First one, where the leader provides training modules and enough chances to come forward to all the different sectors. Yes, it is true that this pandemic clarified that a disease doesn’t belong to the poor or rich, but it is not hidden that poor people do not have enough resources to stay at home for a longer period of time. In order to earn, those people have to go on work even when the desire to live and stay safe is the same as with the rich people who can at least fulfill their basic needs of food, water, clothes and so on for months and even years. So, a leader should be able to lead all the classes and sectors with equal care and poor with a bit more sincerity. Next is the Participative leadership, be it industrial leadership or global leadership, a leader is not the owner or CEO and thus, the leader must not treat the members (people in his case) with limited focus. In a participative leadership style the leader learns as well as teaches, the leader can motivate and get motivated too. Members(people) with technical and logical reasoning should be given chances to contribute as much as possible to represent themselves as well as their sectors. With this multi sectoral participation, the relief could have reached every region and sector. A leader should know where to use strict compliance and where to be compassionate.

Hello, I don’t know about the style of leadership that needs to be adopted but I think it should be the one where the focus should be on the welfare of all rather than personal agendas. The pandemic made many students around the world switch to online study platforms. The crucial years of their lives were lost or didn’t let them reach their potential as many had no resources to attend the online classes online.  The UN meetings or global conferences among political figures spend a lot on conferences and these meetings, when they can be held online too. I believe the leaders who vouched to take the responsibility of their countries should be able to put their personal comforts at bay and make maximum utilization of the resources by using it on things that can make or break lives of billions rather than paying for meetings which do not serve their people at all.

Hello Shefali. I believe a leadership style is appropriate when it is well-planned. Every duty and responsibility needs to be structured with the scope of changes for the uncertain events. An in-depth study of self can provide reasonable opportunities of bringing about the required change. I agree with some points made by Dereth, the purpose of meetings and conferences is to put opinions on table and come to a conclusion where other people’s reviews are also taken into consideration. But the leaders’ work is to bring those plans into implementation. There has to be a right balance. So, I believe a leadership should be able to bring a balance between the individuals by making decisions that fit all.

Hello dear, According to me, there are three leadership styles as per your question and case: Strategic Leadership Participative Leadership High IQ Leadership Along with this, the leader should empower and boost the morale of the people in order to keep them motivated. In hard times like this covid-19, many people go through a loss and feel lost. Therefore, as a leader it becomes one of the duties to help their people. So yes, this is my opinion.

Hi Shefali, I don’t think that it is easy to define a leadership method by the type of work the leader has to do. Rather the leadership should depend on the members who need to be led. Therefore, I believe that “fluid leadership” can provide a suitable leadership style. It changes with the situation and depends on the tasks at hand. Collaborative and participative leadership styles are also suitable but with such a wide mass to lead, following these leadership styles can get tricky.  If you are doing a research article, then you can easily mention more than one leadership style to draw a contrast by comparing those. Let your findings and research result tell you what should be the appropriate style of leadership.
