Sample size

I am conducting a pilot study, and my population is vast, and I need to narrow it down, but the problem is that I have no clue how to generate sample size for a pilot study. Please help else; my mentor will think I am not suitable for this course

Here is the formula used for determining sample size for pilot study:
Sample Size
ss = Z 2 * (p) * (1-p)
c 2
Where:
Z = Z value (e.g. 1.96 for 95% confidence level)
p = percentage picking a choice, expressed as decimal
(.5 used for sample size needed)
c = confidence interval, expressed as decimal
(e.g., .04 = ±4)
