Thesis defense
6 years ago in Dissertation/Thesis By Lisa Hedgewell
I have completed my thesis just a few days ago and now it’s time for thesis defence. So, last evening I was reading an article by a student sharing his experience during the thesis defence session. He scared the hell out of me saying that thesis defence is probably one of the toughest and challenging tasks. And only 10 out of 30 students would be able to survive it and now I am scared what will happen to me? Will I be able to survive?
Please, someone, suggest me some tips so that I can survive that session. Is there any preparation which I need to do?
Please help!!

I am not scaring you but telling you the truth that yes, thesis defence is actually the toughest challenges during the research. In my university, I had two vivas one with internal and another with external. Find out the format your university follows and prepare accordingly. It is usually for 30 to 45 minutes. Your panel must have already read your thesis so they will start asking you questions as soon as you will enter. Don’t be late. Good Luck! Do Well!

I understand your circumstance. It happens to each PhD student. Fortunately, When I was at your place, I was guided well by my seniors. Before showing up for the defence, read your research, again and again, make sure that you know in and out of your paper thoroughly. Plan ahead of time for potential questions your board may ask and try to reply with some convincing answers. Your slide introduction should work splendidly with no glaring mistakes. Speak well as your board would judge you on that as well.

I know thesis defence is a nerve wracking and a complex task to do but obviously, it is not impossible. Give yourself time to prepare. Every university has their own rules and regulations, so find out the guidelines of your university and start preparing accordingly. One thing common is that they will give you 30-45 minutes of time to present your whole research work and followed by question and answer round, where all the professors from different departments and external professors ask questions about your work.

See, I don’t want to scare you but yes this is actually a difficult task. Your performance totally depends on your preparation and your confidence. The only suggestion I would give you is to go well prepared and answers there every question with full confidence. I hope you will do well and all the best.
