What is the purpose of adding slots to patch antennas, and how are they designed?

I notice that many patch antenna designs feature slots of various shapes and positions.
I want to understand their functional role—whether for tuning, bandwidth enhancement, or polarization control—and the general design considerations involved.

From my experience, adding slots to patch antennas is a versatile way to tune resonant frequencies, increase bandwidth, or control polarization. I have seen simple shapes like U- or L-slots introduce additional current paths, effectively creating multi-resonant behavior, while more complex fractal or meandered slots allow miniaturization. I would recommend carefully choosing the slot shape, size, and position through simulation, as small changes can significantly shift resonance or pattern. In practice, slots are often used to achieve dual-band operation, improve impedance matching, or enhance axial ratio in circularly polarized designs.
