Modified DH parameters (Craig's convention) attach the reference frame to the near (proximal) end of a link, unlike Standard DH which attaches it to the far end. This change alters the order of transformations (rotation then translation vs. translation then rotation), making the kinematic chain and Jacobian calculation more intuitive for some serial chain structures.
