Hello Good question firstly, and coming to the question – the number of citations is an important part in the order of your work to be widely recognized or even get a good academic positions related to your expertise. However, this is not the only factor, the quality of work will matter a lot. There are papers with not so many citations which are exceptional & fundamental in the research fields. So, here i guess it depends upon the point of view that someone think of the issue.

Hi Mukesh, The number of citations is an easy metric & therefore is so widely used. A given paper could have been highly cited simply in order to be criticized. Nowadays, most research institutions/universities use the total number of papers and their citations for evaluation of their research performance. Because of this, many researchers tend to publish as much as they can by cutting their production to the maximum number of pieces, thus reducing the time and effort that enabling to increase the number of their papers. However, as far as the evaluation criteria remain unchanged, the situation can’t be reverted & the inflation in the research papers quality would continue to increase.
