It is essential that you use right tenses while writing your research. I can understand, the circumstances get significantly more complicated when you have to decide which tense to use while composing a scientific research paper. In scientific writing, use of tenses which relies on the section of the paper you are writing. I would share some points which you can use while using the tense my professor told me. 1. Use simple present tense for defining the objective of the study 2. Review of literature, and results of past research. 3. Simple past tense to explain existing research on the topic and to describe your actions I hope all these points will help you.

There are no specific rules for scientific use of tenses. You need to be aware of 4 tenses, i.e. simple past, simple present, present perfect and past perfect. If you need any help in arranging these tenses in their right place you can look into this link: https://www.phdbox.edu.in/phd-thesis-writing-assistance.php They provide high quality editing services. All the best. Keep writing.

Scientific use of tense depends on whether you are writing in the past, present or future, or simply sharing the opinion. There are no hard and fast rules in scientific writing, and it is just that you need to be clear and to the point while writing.
