Why are rectangular substrates the most common choice in patch antenna design?

In studying patch antenna literature, rectangular substrates appear far more frequently than circular or irregular shapes.
I want to understand whether this is due to fabrication ease, electromagnetic performance, or simulation convenience.

From my experience, rectangular substrates dominate patch antenna design largely due to practical fabrication and modeling advantages. I have seen that rectangular shapes allow straightforward cutting, easy mounting, and predictable current distribution, which simplifies both impedance matching and radiation pattern control. I would also note that rectangular geometries align well with standard simulation boundary conditions, making EM modeling faster and more reliable. In practice, while circular or irregular substrates are possible, the combination of ease, performance predictability, and manufacturability keeps rectangular patches the preferred choice for most research and commercial applications.
