Fault in design

Hello, i am a fulltime PhD student from machine design area of research. From past one year i have designed a tool which can be used in cutting machines. I had put in a lot of efforts in doing so but alas, in my interim presentation my mentor asked me to find design faults from the previous existing machines for validation. After this it seemed like all my hardwork went in drain. Hence i want to know how to detect a fault in design?
Help me please! ASAP.

To identify a fault in a design, analysis of the design with respect to dimension, tolerances and thickness has to be done by comparing it with the application of usage. After which time consumption, material removal rate, speed and feed of the machine has to be analysed. By performing this analysis, fault in the design with respect to its weight, material and accuracy can be calculated.
