Factor analysis on SPSS

I am feeling so good that my questionnaire is ready and even my data collection process is also done. My sample size is 200. My mentor has recommended to use factor analysis on SPSS. And the bad news is statistics is not my forte. So, I want to have some basic understanding of what factor analysis is, why is it done and how does it help me?
