Raj, initially the sample will be volatilized, then ionized and in the final step, it involves detection and analysis.

Can someone please explain the steps briefly?

Raj, in the first step, the sample is vaporized and using capillary column its components are separated. In the next step, the components that leave the GC will be ionised. This process is completed mass spectrometer that uses chemical or electron ionisation sources. The ions will then be separated based on their different mass-to-charge ratio. The final step includes ion detection and analysis. If you want to know the details regarding the principle of the same then visit http://www.bris.ac.uk/nerclsmsf/techniques/gcms.html.
