There are alternative methods that can replace traditional methods. But even today the researchers all around prefer traditional methods like Gram or differential stains, colony morphology, selective media, cell morphology, manual counts and biochemical assays to determine the presence or absence, the number and identity of microorganisms that are cultured.

Khaja, an alternative to the traditional microbiological test is MALDI-ToF (matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation time of flight mass spectrometry). This is a phenotypic identification method used to investigate the identity of a microorganism on the basis of a fingerprint or protein profile. It is inexpensive to run samples in the MALDIToF and results will be available within minutes.

Yes, MALDI-ToF serves as an alternate method. There is one more method known as PCR method. PCR method can be used to identify organisms based on the 26s rRNA gene or 16s rRNA gene in bacteria and ITS or D2 region in fungi. This method can provide a result in a few hours and can identify a type or subtype to a very distinct level.

RMM’s methods are considered as a future of microbiology. There are three types of RMM’s; quantitative, qualitative and identification method. Check http://blog.rapidmicromethods.com/ for more information.
