Appraches used for kidney stone treatment

Hello all! I’m conducting a study in urology. Other than Nephrectomy is there any other method that can be used for the purpose of kidney stone treatment?

Bhagirathi, Nephrectomy is being used to treat kidney stone across the globe and will be used in the future as well. But recently, few techniques have been evolved in the field of urology. One of them is high-powered laser technique. This method uses a technology called “moses”. Here the procedures are faster and are safer. With moses, it is easier to accurately hit stones that are moving. This makes it easier to break down stones without damaging surrounding cell/ tissues and causing bleeding.

There is a method called percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) which is used for large kidney stones. In this method, you can make small incisions in the lower back of the patient, and then use a camera to monitor and certain instruments to break up and remove the stones. This method causes less bleeding in patients.

Meghana and parul are right. PCNL and high powered laser techniques are used in kidney stone removal process. Another latest approach is using single-use scopes, disposable ureteroscopes. These give patients access to ureteroscopy to treat their kidney stones. Reusable scopes are expensive, often require repair but the scopes are fragile. But single-use scopes, are used only once and does not face any such problems.
