AutoCAD vs SolidWorks

I’m conducting my research in mechanical engineering field. My research topic is ‘ design and fabrication of portable water turbine’. For designing purpose I want to use autocad software. But my friends recommended solidworks software. Which is better among the two?

I personally suggest you to use AutoCAD as it is a flexible CAD and has the ability to annotate drawings, attach and import data from PDF files, and to extract object data to tables. Whereas SolidWorks is a solid modeling application and help you create models using engineering terms, such as bosses, holes and slots, rather than using geometric terms.

AutoCAD is a computer aided design and drafting software which is used to make mechanical drawings, architectural drawings, and civil engineering drawings whereas solidworks is solid modeler design software which is parametric in nature. If you want design a 2D image then use autocad but if you want a 3D design then opt for solidworks.

Yes I agree with Preetham, AutoCAD is well suited for 2D and solidworks for 3D design. Also in terms of assemblies, solidworks is a clear winner.
