I have always heard about schrodinger cat. Can someone explain me the physics behind the same?

That’s a very interesting question. Along with a Geiger counter, a hammer, a vial of poison, a radioactive substance and a cat is placed in a steel box. Geiger counter detects the radioactivity as the radioactive substance decays. When the Geiger detects the radioactivity, it triggers the hammer to release the poison, which kills the cat. Until the box is opened, one cannot determine whether the cat is alive or dead. This is because the cat’s fate is tied to whether or not the atom has decayed.

Well said Rajkumar. Here I would like to add another factor that that needs to be considered. That is, if the cat that was put by Schrödinger was alive or dead in equal parts.

Jane, in simple words, until the box is opened, the cat’s state is completely unknown. Hence a cat can be considered to be both alive and dead simultaneously until it is observed.

That is quite tricky concept.

By Sapna C K Answered 5 years ago

Yes it is. This concept serves as basic for explaining dual nature of wave particle.

By Sneha Answered 5 years ago

Exactly. Sapna is right A paradox based on schrodinger cat was developed which explains dual nature of a wave. https://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/08/130812-physics-schrodinger-erwin-google-doodle-cat-paradox-science/.
