Proposing a new algorithm

6 years ago in Research Topic Ideas By Sonali Jain

Hi, I am doing my PhD in computer science and my topic is related with security and reliable protocols in wireless sensor networks (WSN). I am basically required to propose a new and novel protocol/algorithm that will be better than the existing ones. Let me tell you that there are a lot of ongoing researches in this area and suggesting something new is getting quite tedious. I am afraid that this is a redundant area, but my guide specializes in WSN and so I have no other option. Presently I am just stuck as to what ‘new’ can I do with this topic. Please suggest if you have any good options.

From what I understand, you are falling short of ideas. I think the best way you can go about this is select any latest algorithm in this field, preferable from 2017 or 18, and modify it slightly. If that is not possible, then you can study the methodology of that work and induce one more algorithm in the complete work. That added algorithm can be taken from some other work. Name you proposed method with the different name, and this should be fine. My point is that only a slightest change can make a huge difference.

Why don’t you just seek help from your guide? Like you said, your guide specializes in this field, she/he can surely help you out. If not with a new method, but with some good, valuable research papers?

Have you thought about discussing your work with your seniors? Even that might help. Maybe you can take up their work and extend their research? In this way, they can also help you understand the work. And if this is not an option, then you can work on some of the existing work of your guide.
