Purposive sampling is used when the researcher opts for specific set of individuals within the population. On the other hand, snowball sampling technique is used if there exists a very small subgroup of the population.

Purposive sampling enables selection of sampling frame that is impacted by specific issue. It aims to determine the sampling frame depending on the specific study. But the major drawback of this type of sampling is that it requires collaboration to determine the characteristics of the participants. Snowball sampling is used as a referral method where small set of individuals are employed. The drawback of this type of sampling method is that the participants may not be willing to share the information owing to the fear of data confidentiality.

Snowball sampling method is non-probability sampling technique which is commonly used in sociology. This technique is often used to perform exploratory research or when there is a small set of population.
